Phormium Weaving Workshop |
Learn to weave small baskets and other items with a new material- the colourful leaves of Phormium tenax. This friendly summertime class will be led by Mindy Grewar, who is a local “weekend weaver” and former community arts officer in Scotland and New Zealand . She learned the technique from Maori weavers, whose tradition evolved from making essential clothing, shelter, containers, and spiritual objects from natural materials. We’ll start by collecting leaves from the Garden, then folding and weaving them into flowers for dried arrangements. With the basics mastered, we’ll go on to making a small basket to take home, and if time allows look at making small toys and bracelets. |

Moth Trapping and Identification |
The event will start at 8pm on Friday 17th August at the Glass Class, with an illustrated introduction to moths showing the diversity of our moth species and how they differ (or not) from butterflies.
A number of moth traps will be set up in the gardens and we can observe them in action. There will be a chance to see some moths arriving at the traps and to help with their identification. Finishing time will be 11pm. The traps will remain out all night and at 10.00am on Saturday 18th August, the contents will be examined and people can help with the identification of all the moths caught overnight. All moths will be released unharmed. Bring along your own photos or specimens for identification as well! |
