There's only a single row of columns down the middle of the building, on the north side of the central corridor.  The classrooms on the south side of the building are just 4' narrower than those on the north.

Art studios, science labs, domestic science kitchens, and the library were all housed on the broader north side of the block, with soft indirect lighting.  Most other subjects - english, maths, languages, history, geography - were taught on the slightly narrower classrooms on the south side, with brighter direct light. Three small classrooms at the east end of the building were originally for "backwards classes".
