Editor of the Cornhill Magazine in which Far from the Madding Crowd was serialised in 1874. The Hand of Ethelberta was also serialised in the Cornhill under Steven's editorship. Although after that Hardy's and Steven's professional relationship ended, Hardy continued to regard Stephen highly and for a few years to come would still turn to him for advice.
