This map of the Scene of the story appeared as frontispiece to the first edtion of The Return of the Native (3 vols. London: Smith, Elder and Co. 1878) and in the subsequent one-volume edition (Smith, Elder, 1880).

Between 1880 and 1990 it never appeared in any edition of the novel. In 1990 it was included in the World's Classics Editon (edited by Simon Gatrell. Oxford: Oxford University Press). It has subsequently been included in the Penguin Classics edition (edited by Tony Slade with an introduction by Penny Boumelha. Harmondsworth: Penguin Books Ltd., 1999).
