UTREC Remit

UTREC Forcuses on academic activity involving living human subjects, human tissues and other human samples, and also activities which may have potential adverse consequences for human welfare and wellbeing.  In particular, it is concerned with;

  • The welfare and protection of partifipants/subjects in research and teaching
  • the ethics of research practices and modes of activity involving human subjects
  • morally inappropriate uses of outcomes of such research
  • issues of research sponsorship where potential conflicts of interest arise

UTREC will have a lead role in disseminating general information throughout the University with regard to such activities and their regulations and will have responsibility for determining and monitoring the procedures governing the approval process.

UTREC (and the Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee, AWEC) will report to the University Audit Committee, which in turn reports to the University Court, and to the Risk Management Task Group.  Additionally, AWEC will submit annual reports (for information only) to UTREC and the Convenors of the two committees shoud liaise regularly.

UTREC will provide an overview of funders/sponsors providing funding for research and assess whether such funder should be accepted on ethical merit.

UTREC comes under the 'Ethical Assurance Committee', which itself comes under the 'Audit and Risk Committee' both of which answer directly to University Court.

All Research and teaching activities in ALL Schools/Departments/Units of the University that involve the use of living animals (including mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, insects etc) will require formal approval from AWEC in accordance with procedures to be ussed by AWEC
