Collaboration
Collaboration within this University
Ethical approval should typically be sought through only one of the School/Department/Units involved, normally that of the Lead Researcher. Before approval is given the SEC MUST send a copy of the submitted application to the other School/Department/Units SEC(s) with a proposal of how the application should be reviewed.
The SEC in receipt of the original application would normally take the lead on approval but must seek comment from the other SEC(s) involved. However, they must seek comment and input from the other SEC(s) involved before final approval is granted.
Other Universities with UTREC or equivalents
Research often occurs in collaboration with other higher education institutions. Where collaboration occurs with a main researcher out with the University, the St Andrews researcher and the School Officers should satisfy themselves that ethical approval has been gained by the main researcher from an institution which has a good and effective ethics committee. As such Ethical Approval given by other U.K. Universities will normally be recognised by UTREC. However, please note a copy of the external approval letter and application must be submitted to the relevant SEC and extracted details must be added to the Database.
