Overview
The University of St Andrews has a formulated strategy for learning and teaching. The current strategy is contained in the following documents.
3.1. Strategic Plan
The University Strategic Plan for 2008-2018 provides a framework for the many strategic and operational decisions that will occur at various levels across this institution and identifies the fundamental strategic aims for the next ten years. The Academic Strategy, see Academic Strategy (PDF, 121 KB) consists of the Research Strategy and the Learning and Teaching Strategy.
Supporting strategies and strategic plan of Academic Schools and Administrative Units can also be viewed on this page.
3.2 Academic Strategy
The Academic Strategy, see Academic Strategy (PDF, 121 KB) consists of the Research Strategy and the Learning and Teaching Strategy as described in the University Strategic Plan.
3.3 Learning and Teaching Quality Enhancement Strategy
At the heart of St Andrews’ institutional mission is a desire and determination to pursue excellence in learning and teaching as well as in research. Consequently all staff are encouraged to aspire to continuous improvement for the entire institution and in all its activities. Enhancement is a home-grown value to which we are committed, regardless of any need to meet external requirements. It must be recognised that much of the initiative for improvement of learning and teaching originates at the level of academic staff in Schools and other staff in academic support units; it is not solely dependent upon direction from senior management.
Nevertheless, this University-wide Quality Enhancement Strategy is driven by an ambition to support staff in their efforts to pursue excellence in all aspects of learning and teaching, such that the quality of the learning experience in St Andrews continues to achieve wide recognition for attracting learners of the highest ability from across Scotland, the UK and the world.
The Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee
The Teaching Learning and Assessment Committee (TLAC) reports to Academic Council/Senate. It is the Committee where matters affecting the enhancement of teaching, learning and assessment may be given consideration, taking into account the views of Schools and Units all of whom are represented on the Committee.
TLAC Open Fora
The TLAC Open Fora, which promote the sharing of good practice across the University, are held twice per academic year, one in each semester and are open to all members of staff. Previous topics include feedback, employability, research-teaching linkages.
3.4 Employability Strategy
The Employability Strategy, see Employability Strategy 2012 (PDF, 84 KB) takes account of developments and of the very considerable
progress in addressing issues of employability; it retains ambitious but realistic aims; and adopts a format similar to other University strategy documents through the emphasis of Key Performance Indicators. The strategy sets out strategic goals, creates a framework for assisting students to take responsibility for their own future, and clarifies the management and ownership of the strategy.
3.5 Deans' List
The Deans' List, an annual award for academic excellence, promoted by the four Deans of the University, was introduced in academic year 2007/08.
Undergraduate students who achieve an outstanding overall result in the course of the academic year have their names inscribed on the Deans' List, an honour which will also appear on their University transcript.
