St Andrews Abroad
'I decided that I wanted to go to on exchange to Canada because I’d never been there before, and because the courses which Queen’s offered seemed to fit in well with my own programme of study. Researching different Canadian schools, I was really impressed by the sound of their creative writing programmes. Within medieval history, similarly, I had the opportunity to study medieval art and manuscript illustration as well as primary texts and scholarly sources. This opened up new ways of looking at my field to me. I was also really excited to make new friends from different countries, and experience a different culture independently. Neither the academics nor the social adventures at Queen’s disappointed. I would recommend going on an exchange to anyone - and going on exchange to Queen’s, even more!' Catriona, English & Mediaeval History, studied at Queen's University
The University of St Andrews has a number of exciting opportunities for students to spend a semester or full academic year in the USA or Canada as part of their degree programme (usually Junior Honours year). From 2012-2013, we will also be selecting students for two new St Andrews Abroad programmes - one in Australia and one in Singapore.

Information
Students who are in their first or second year at St Andrews and who are interested in taking part in the St Andrews Abroad programme in their third year should come along to the information meeting which will be held in late October (details available here shortly). This information session will include details of the exchanges available, the application and selection process, and time for questions. St Andrews students who have already participated in an exchange, as well as current exchange students from our partner institutions, will be available to answer questions about their experiences.
Before applying, you should research your options carefully to ensure that courses are available at partner institutions that are appropriate and that will satisfy your degree requirements. You should consult your School's Study Abroad Co-ordinator for further information. Please alse see Academic Information for further details about the transfer of credit and the conversion of grades obtained on an exchange programme.
Our partner profiles and partner websites will be extremely useful in helping you decide if the exchange is right for you.
Finance
St Andrews students participating in an approved St Andrews Abroad programme do not pay tuition fees to their host institution, but will be charged their normal St Andrews tuition fee for the full academic year.
Students will be responsible for paying for travel and living expenses.
Further finanical details are available on our partner profiles and under Money Matters.
We are delighted that several of our St Andrews Abroad programmes have scholarships attached.
Application
Application to the St Andrews Abroad programme is competitive, but some exchanges are more competitive than others. The most important criterion is a strong academic background, with a minimum entry requirement of 13.5 in your intended Honours subject(s) in first year.
Step 1
Once you decide which Honours programme you intend to enter, you should discuss your intention to apply for the St Andrews Abroad programme with your School's Study Abroad Co-ordinator.
Step 2
Consult the website and course catalogue for the university you are interested in and see if there are courses on offer which cover the same ground as St Andrews Junior Honours courses.
Step 3
Obtain a Letter of Permission from your School(s) (usually Study Abroad Co-ordinator) to confirm permission to study abroad.
Step 4
Obtain a sealed reference (signature across the seal) from a member of academic staff (from a subject you intend to pursue to Honours). Please give your referee some detail about your application and let them know that, if your internal application is successful, the University will forward your reference to the partner institution.
Step 5
Complete the St Andrews Abroad Application (Word, 146 KB) application.
NB There is a separate application form for Emory University. This is available from Audrey Dyce, contact details below.
Step 6
Submit your application form, your letter(s) of permission, and your academic reference to the Collaborations & Study Abroad team by 5pm on Friday 16 November 2012.
Selection
Shortlisting will be undertaken by a University committee on the basis of the application and reference.
Interviews for the University of California will be held during Revision Week of Semester One.
Interviews for all other St Andrews Abroad programmes will be held on Wednesday afternoon of Week 1, Semester Two.
