Entry requirements and selection criteria
The University of St Andrews admits students from all over the world and we have experience in considering a wide range of international qualifications against our entry requirements.
Please note that nomination by a partner institution or provider does not guarantee an offer of a place at St Andrews. All decisions on admission are made by the University of St Andrews.
The selection process will include consideration of the following information as part of your application:
- Higher education academic record to date;
- The context in which results have been achieved;
- Personal statement;
- Academic reference;
- Where appropriate, English language ability.
Please note that only complete applications will be considered.
Undergraduate applicants
Applicants for the Undergraduate Exchange and the Undergraduate International Study Abroad programmes must have completed at least one year in full-time higher education by the point of intended entry to St Andrews.
Candidates should have a minimum average grade of 3.2 (on a US 4.0 GPA scale) or equivalent.
Postgraduate applicants
Applicants for Postgraduate Taught programmes, whether Exchange or Study Abroad, are expected to have already completed a first degree programme.
Postgraduate candidates should have a bachelor’s degree with Honours (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, with a final overall grade of 2:1 (UK), 2:2 or B+ (Europe), 3.6 GPA (USA) or equivalent. In addition, postgraduate candidates should have a strong average grade in their current degree programme.
English language proficiency
Applicants who are from non-English speaking countries, or whose first language is not English, must demonstrate evidence of English language proficiency at the time of application. This should be in the form of an English Language Proficiency test.
Please check our minimum requirements and the key types of proficiency tests we accept, which are listed on our English Language Teaching Centre website.
For September entrants, the English Language Teaching (ELT) Centre offers a highly recommended and enjoyable four-week pre-sessional English Language Course. The course includes study skills and introduces you to the University and life in the UK. For further information, please refer to the ELT website.
