Faculties

When you apply for an undergraduate degree at the University of St Andrews, you will apply to a specific degree programme. However, your admission will be to one of the University's four Faculties, which are the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Divinity, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Science.

Each Faculty is led by a Dean and has its own entrance requirements which you must satisfy in addition to the subject specific entrance requirements of your chosen programme.

The University's Schools and Departments all belong to one of the four Faculties. Most of the subjects you study during your time at the University will be offered by the Schools within your own Faculty, so you should choose to undertake a degree from a Faculty whose offered academic subjects interest you most.

Some subjects are offered in both the Faculties of Arts and Science. These cross-faculty subjects are:

  • Economics
  • Geography
  • Management
  • Mathematics
  • Psychology
  • Sustainable Development

The content of the subject is the same irrespective of Faculty.

If you wish to study these subjects in the Faculty of Science you will be required to take at least two modules in the following science subjects during your first two years: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics or Psychology. If these science subjects do not interest you then you should choose the MA degree in the Faculty of Arts.

Though you will likely belong to the same Faculty throughout your career at the University, many students take modules offered by several Schools, and students may take up to 80 credits in courses offered by another Faculty.

The Faculty of Arts offers a variety of modular programmes that will lead to a Master of Arts (MA) degree. Read about subjects and Schools represented by this Faculty and Faculty specific entrance requirements.

The Faculty of Divinity offers programmes that can lead to a Bachelor of Divinity (BD), a Master of Arts (MA) or a Master of Theology (MTheol) degree. Read about subjects and Schools represented by this Faculty and Faculty specific entrance requirements.

The Faculty of Medicine offers a programme that will lead to a BSc (Honours) in Medicine. Read about subjects and Schools represented by this Faculty and Faculty specific entrance requirements.
