Terminology
Adviser of Studies
Their role is to guide students in choice of modules and ultimately approve the programme of modules chosen. In Faculties of Science and Divinity each student is assigned to an Adviser who should be contacted regarding any matter affecting students' studies and academic welfare. (Students can also see the Academic Adviser at Student Services). In the Faculty of Arts, there is one Adviser who has a team of Assistant Advisers who are concerned with choice of modules at the beginning of the academic year, re-advising within the first two weeks if necessary, and self-advising for the following session in April.

John Burnett Hall - formerly the Atholl Hotel.
Academic Family
The main purpose of the Academic family is to introduce first-year students to one another and to third- and fourth-year 'parents'. This befriending often continues throughout the students' time at University and sometimes for many years after.
Raisin Weekend
A festival run by students involving Academic Parents and their 'children', participating in different traditions.
Bute
A University Department which houses the School of Biological and Medical Sciences.
Cash Office
University department dealing with any monies or debts due to the University: Halls fees, tuition fees, telephone accounts. Also deals with arrangements for paying by installments.
Chatten
Another name for McIntosh Hall of Residence.
Fresher
A first-year undergraduate student.
Freshers Week/Orientation Week
The week preceding the start of the academic year.
Gatty
Another name for the houses at Albany Park.
Graduand
A student that has finished their final exams but has not yet graduated.
Hall of Residence
University-owned accommodation of which there are nine, all providing meals; two have self-catering facilities. There are also self-catered student houses.
Internal mail
Mail sent between departments of the University, transported by the University porters.
Pigeonholes
Mailboxes (labelled alphabetically) for students' and staff mail, housed in University departments and Halls of Residence.
Quad
University ground near Lower and Upper College Hall and St Salvator's Chapel.
Registry
University department that deals with student records, fees, matriculation, official letters, lost ID cards and recording of credits.
Sabbatical Officers
Elected Officers (students) of the Students' Association who take leave from their studies for one year in order to work full-time in the Union for student representation and services.
Warden
A University staff member living in Hall of Residence who is responsible for the welfare, discipline and community in Hall.
NHS
National Health Service. This is the British healthcare system that enables you to have free medical care whilst studying here.
GP
General Practitioner. Every student will be assigned a GP who will be based at the Health Centre in Pipeland Road. This doctor will refer you on for more specialist care if necessary.
Surgery
Clinics held by doctors under the NHS at set times, using an appointment system.
