Exchanges and study abroad

St Andrews has a range of study abroad programmes, primarily for undergraduate students. The majority of programmes are run by individual Schools, including 30 European exchanges and several programmes outside Europe, from Biology’s exchange with James Cook University, Australia, to History’s exchange with the American University in Cairo. In addition, the University has a number of exchange partners in North America, and each North American programme is open to undergraduate students in several Schools across the University. Some of our North American exchanges have scholarships attached.

Full details of the programmes available; the application and selection procedure; essential pre-departure information and procedures, and profiles of students who have already studied abroad, are available at Outgoing students.

Please note: Study abroad for credit is only permitted on existing University-approved programmes.  The University has a range of exchange and study abroad programmes, all of which are carefully selected and monitored.  We have good relations with our partners overseas and work closely with them to ensure our students enjoy a successful period abroad and a smooth return to St Andrews thereafter.

Credit and grade conversion

Please see the policy on Credits and grade conversions for study abroad also available from the Outgoing students webpage, for details of the policy and procedure related to the acquisition of credit and grades at another institution as part of an approved study abroad programme, and the conversion of credits and grades to the St Andrews reporting scale.

Erasmus

The Erasmus scheme is a European project funded by the European Commission, within the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme.  Students who undertake study or work in another EU country as part of their degree programme may be eligible to participate in Erasmus.
