The Principal's Medal for outstanding endeavour and achievement

The Principal's Medal is an award made to students who have displayed exceptional endeavour and achievement during their time at St Andrews. Each award will carry a value of £1,000 in addition to a specially produced medal.

The Principal's Medal is open to any discipline. In addition to high academic standards the achievements considered could include sporting, musical, charitable or other activities or a combination of some or all of these.

Award process

Nominations are now invited for this year’s award. Nominations should be made from now on with a closing date of 1 March 2013. Nominations may be made either by the student concerned or by someone on their behalf. To be eligible for nomination, students must be either in their final year of undergraduate study or be a postgraduate student.

To submit an application or nomination, applicants and nominators are required to complete an application form with details of the achievement/endeavor, available at the following link: Proctor's Office

In addition to the application form, a copy of the student’s CV, a *copy of their academic transcript* and the names of two independent referees should be forwarded either by email to Dr Fiona Thompson (fjt71@st-andrews.ac.uk) with the subject ‘The Principal’s Medal’ or by hard copy to College Gate, North Street marked ‘The Principal’s Medal’.

Up to three awards are available each year. It is to be emphasised that the award will be made only if there is a candidate or candidates of exceptional merit.

 

The selection panel will typically comprise:

• The Principal

• The Vice-Principal (Proctor)

• The President of the Students' Association

• Up to four additional senior academic members of staff (to be invited by the Principal)

Following the closing date, the Executive Officer to the Principal’s Office will contact the referees for the short-listed nominations and request a reference. The winning applicants (and nominators if applicable) will be notified in April/May.  Applicants may be called for interview if necessary. 

The winner/s will be required to write a short report about themselves and to express their thanks for the award.  This will be sent to the Development Office to pass on to the donors of the award. The medal will be awarded at an appropriate graduation ceremony.

 

The winners of the Principal’s Medal in 2011-2012 were:

Aria Campbell-Danesh, Undergraduate Student, Psychology.
