Ethical requirements regarding research (UTREC)

Research involving living human subjects, tissues and/or other samples by all members (staff & Students) of this University require formal Ethical Approval.

Students are responsible for completing the University’s ‘Ethical Application Form’ in order to gain formal approval. Students must discuss their research proposal with their supervisor, and obtain their support, before submitting an Ethical Application Form to the relevant School Ethics Committee (SEC).

Researchers intending to involve the participation of children (16 under) and or vulnerable adults must pay particular attention to the policy guidelines for ‘Working with Children and or Vulnerable Groups’ as outlined on the UTREC website.

Ethical approval is mandatory prior to the commencement of all research, including Pilot studies, and work must not commence until formal Ethical Approval has been obtained by the SEC. A copy of the formal written Ethical Approval must be submitted within the appendix of all dissertation submissions; Honours, Masters, MLitt and PhD. With no exception.

For further information please see the UTREC website.

Funders and ethics (UTREC)

All researchers receiving funding from an external organisation must complete a Funders Ethical Approval Application Form (in addition to an Ethical Application Form, as appropriate), unless the intended Funder appears on the ‘Automatically Approved Ethical Funders List’ published on the UTREC website.

Researchers should also be aware that some bodies providing funding for projects may stipulate their own Ethical and Legal considerations. The researcher must be fully aware of any obligations specified by the body providing funding and the implications this may or may not have for their research, including methods of research, confidentiality and retention.
