English Language Teaching
English Language Teaching (ELT) provides high quality English language programmes for international students. We are a friendly department, staffed by well-qualified language teaching professionals from all over the UK, most of whom have teaching experience in other countries and all of whom have well-developed intercultural awareness and familiarity with the needs of international students.
Our core activities include year-long foundation programmes and pre-sessional courses, as well as the following modules:
- ET1001/1002 in English as a Foreign Language (designed for students for whom English is not the first language).
- ET2001/2002 in English for Academic Purposes (for non-native speakers of English).
- LI1001/1002 in Foundations of Language (introductory Linguistics modules, open to all students with an interest in language and linguistics).
We also run introductory teacher training courses in TEFL for students thinking of teaching English in another country (for example, as part of a degree in Modern Languages).
In addition, we offer language support to matriculated students for whom English is a second or subsequent language, throughout their studies. For up-to-date information about the In-sessional English Language Support Service (IELSS) and the types of language development opportunities it offers, see In-sessional Language Support.
