Sport and exercise opportunities
Membership and facilities
Our Fitness+ membership offers many benefits to students, including unlimited usage of the fitness suites, access to Saints Fitness classes and the ability to book most sports facilities free of charge. The quickest and easiest way to join is by the online shop via the website. Your matriculation card then becomes your membership card so please bring that along when you use the facilities. The Sports Centre offers a wide range of facilities, both indoor and outdoor, including four recently refurbished fitness suites.
Hall Sport
The Hall Sport programme is a series of leagues and one-off competitions designed for students who live in halls. The programme runs throughout the academic year and provides students who live in halls with the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of different sports and activities. All of the halls compete against each other in all of the different events, where they gather points that go towards their total. At the end of the year the hall with the largest points total (points from both the men’s and women’s competitions are combined) is deemed the overall winner.
Hall Sport is an excellent way of getting involved with sport at the University either through playing or supporting your hall. It provides an opportunity to get involved with hall life, try new sports or activities, socialise and meet new people.

Rec Sport
The Rec Sport programme includes recreational sessions in the following sports: basketball, badminton, volleyball and netball. The sessions are designed as fun sessions where you can just turn up and play, no previous experience required.
Volunteering opportunities
There are many volunteering opportunities for you in sport from local community sports projects to national and international volunteering opportunities (for further details please see Volunteering). Our flagship volunteering initiatives include: the Lead 2014 project, working in conjunction with the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee, Sportscotland and the Youth Sport Trust as well as the UK Sport Zambia IDEALS Project, a partnership between seven sports focused universities across the UK and two Zambian NGOs (Sport in Action and Edusport).
Fitness services
Train smarter, set goals, be focused, get results!
The Sports Centre has a range of services available to everyone, offered by a team of qualified fitness instructors to ensure that you get the most out of your time exercising.
Athletic Union Club Sport
Are you looking for adventure, competition, excitement, exercise, exhilaration, exploration, fitness, fun, physical activity, team spirit and the ultimate St Andrews social life? Look no further. The Athletic Union (AU) is the student organisation for the support and development of University sports clubs. We are run by students, for students. Every St Andrews student is automatically a member of the AU and so has the right to join any of more than 60 sports clubs. Students who get involved in AU clubs have access to a host of first class opportunities for: personal development, health and fitness opportunities, travel, development of leadership skills, management skills, lifelong friendships and employability.
Performance sport
The Focus Sport Programme provides additional support to a select number of AU clubs (Golf, Tennis, Rugby, Waterpolo, Football, Ultimate, Fencing and Canoe) to develop high-level performance, increase participation and promote outreach opportunities. We have appointed Directors of Sport: two full-time (Rugby, Football), one half-time (Tennis) and three Honorary (Golf, Waterpolo, Ultimate) to develop a strategic vision for these sports.
The Focus Programme also supports individuals through the Saints Scholarship and Golf Bursary programme (funded by the R&A).
If you compete at a high level (national representation at junior or senior level) in your chosen sport please contact the Performance Sport Manager. If you are involved in one of our Focus Sports please contact the relevant Director of Sport:
