Security and personal safety

Security Service

The University security service operates throughout the year providing cover at night (7.00pm to 7.00am) and at weekends and on statutory holidays (24 hours) while during the day the service is operated by janitors.  All can be contacted by dialling extension 3985 from an internal telephone. Members of security staff wear uniform and carry University staff identification cards.

The security team is there to patrol and assist but are also authorised to report breaches of security and discipline; to require production of identification cards; and to require unauthorised persons to leave buildings. Please cooperate with our staff to ensure that your study and residential environments remain safe and secure and in particular do not wedge or otherwise leave doors open or allow unauthorised access to buildings, including 24-hour classrooms and halls of residence.

Please report at the time anything that you consider suspicious.

CCTV

The University manages an internal closed circuit television surveillance system for the purposes of the prevention and detection of crime and for personal safety.  Cameras are located in various academic and residential buildings and in some open spaces.  Further information including details of the CCTV operating procedures can be found at Out of hours protocol (PDF, 97 KB) (also available from the Estates web pages).
