Student Accommodation Services

Who are we?

Student Accommodations Services (SAS) are responsible for the allocation of students into all university residences, as well as monitoring any Health and Safety breaches within halls. All matters relating to room allocations and contracts should be referred to SAS at accommodation@st-andrews.ac.uk or by phoning 01334 46(2510).

The Assistant Director of Residential & Business Services (RBS) is responsible for this department and is supported by a team of experienced and friendly staff based in the Butts Wynd office.

What services do we offer?

The University of St Andrews guarantees an offer of our accommodation to all UK/EU and overseas first year undergraduate students, provided that certain conditions are met.

There are a range of residences available with different facilities to offer. For more information on undergraduate residences please see the undergraduate guide to residences web page, or if you are a postgraduate student please refer to the postgraduate guide to residences web page.

SAS also manage a range of privately owned houses and flats which are let through the university. These properties are designed to accommodate not only undergraduate students, but also students at different stages of their university career, from mature students with families to postgraduate couples. For more information please visit the University managed properties web page.

Additionally, SAS run an online database of private sector properties in the town and surrounding areas. Please see visit www.standrewsstudentpad.co.uk for more information.

Roles within the residence

While SAS deal with the work behind your allocation into halls, within each residence is a team of staff who are helping to make your transition to university life a smooth one.

The Residential Services Manager works for Residential and Business Services, and is the person responsible for health and safety and other building related services provided in a hall of residence, i.e. cleaning, facilities, safety issues, maintenance, and repairs. Each Manager is supported by a team of experienced and friendly staff, comprising a Deputy Residential Services Manager, reception staff, porters, and house service assistants. They report to the Deputy Director of Residential & Business Services who reports to the Director of Residential & Business Services.

The Chef Manager is the key person in a hall of residence relating to the provision of catering services and is responsible for the dining room and main catering kitchens. Together with their team of chefs and food service assistants, they cook and prepare all the food which is served in the hall. Chef Managers report to the Catering Manager, who is the person responsible for the University’s Catering and Hospitality Services, who reports to the Deputy Director of Residential and Business Services.

The Warden has a key role in supporting the development of the hall community and is in charge of discipline and student welfare within the hall of residence. The Warden lives on the premises and works with a team of Assistant Wardens who also live in the hall and are the first point of contact for students with difficulties, problems or questions. The wardennial team are on duty between 7pm and 8am Monday to Friday and between 2pm and 8am on Saturday and Sunday. They also provide daily drop-in sessions for residents. Contact details for the Warden and the wardennial team are clearly displayed in each hall. Wardens report to the Assistant Director of Student Services who, in turn, reports to the Director of Student Services.
