Commuter Student Experience

Bicycles are an economical choice for students travelling to St Andrews

St Andrews is primarily a residential university in that over 90% of its students have stayed in university residential accommodation on arrival in the town in first year. However, the majority of these students do move into the local private accommodation throughout the town during second and subsequent years and so the town has a balanced feel about it. The establishment of contacts and friends can usually be embedded in the residential experience set in the first year. So it's particularly important that we recognise the needs of commuter students and we make every effort to engage with them, offering opportunities for them to meet other commuter students and to access our systems in a more flexible format.

Please ensure that you declare your commuter student status when you matriculate. This entitles you to a number of special allowances. If your status changes, please inform the Registry. Services commuter students are particularly interested in can include:

Commuter Students Common Room

A brand new common room, with lounge area, amenities and kitchen is available for commuter students at 79 North Street, under the ASC (Advice & Support Centre).  Email the ASC for more information.

Assignment submission

Submitting work to tutors remotely in email format rather than hard copy should be possible if you are a commuter student. Contact your departmental secretary directly, but if there is any confusion, please contact the ASC.

Information

The commuter students have a Facebook group for discussion and events. Join today!

Socially

The Townsend Society is open to students who are not linked to a Hall of Residence or may commute from out of town. Each year, if you declare yourself to be a Commuter Student, you will be invited to join this society which meets early in Orientation - Semester 1 and hosts occasions throughout the year for students and their families. This year we also hope to establish sports teams in line with the Townsend.
