Environmental Facilitators

The University has forty-eight Environmental Facilitators who are working to help the University achieve its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2016. Twenty-nine Schools and Units are so far represented and the Environmental Facilitators work with colleagues to lower their building’s carbon footprint through using less energy, reducing waste, travelling less, saving water and changing behaviours.

Environmental Facilitators

Even small acts like switching equipment off overnight, only boiling the water you need in the kettle and turning off the lights when you leave your workplace can make a huge difference to our carbon footprint and the University’s energy bills. Work with your Environmental Facilitator to make a real difference to your School/Unit. Even better, volunteer to be the Environmental Facilitator for your School/Unit.

We are currently actively recruiting new Environmental Facilitators. If you would be interested in becoming one for your School/Unit, please contact capod@st-andrews.ac.uk  or EF postcard (PDF, 277 KB).

Some actions the Environmental Facilitators have already taken include:

Careers Centre: Purchasing reflective radiator sheets

Chaplaincy: 'Switch off lights' signs and closer monitoring of heater use. They also scan docs rather than print/photocopy

Computer Science: Have moved the location of the colour laser printer to reduce use and use remanufactured toner. Are investigating installing solar panels and creating a vegetable garden

IT Services: Will think about environmental behaviour when planning their office move i.e have a centralised printer/photocopy space to discourage desktop printing

Philosophy, Anthropology & Film Studies: Moved to low energy desktop lamps

International Relations: Recyling coffee cups

Medicine: Investigating remote control power switches

Transition University of St Andrews

Transition University of St Andrews is a new initiative that works across the University community on grassroots projects to minimise our carbon footprint. All staff have a part to play, and a range of activities, campaigns and briefings will roll out in 2012.

The Transition website also has a range of information about recycling, food, waste, carbon conversations, local holidaying and the University’s car sharing scheme.
