Research@StAndrews: Full text

Copyright, versions and open access

What is Research@StAndrews: Full text?

Research@StAndrews: Full text is an open access digital repository for the University’s research outputs, making material freely available over the internet. Research@StAndrews: Full text contains copies of PhD and MPhil theses which are submitted as a requirement of University regulations. See
http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/library/resources/collections/theses/  It also stores full text versions of research publications..

Archiving in the repository is not an alternative to traditional publishing but ensures your research is available to a wide audience including those who do not have subscriptions to scholarly journals or who are not aware of the subject repositories in your field of research.

What are the benefits of using Research@StAndrews: Full text?

With increased visibility your research will have the potential for greater citation impact. Research@StAndrews: Full text also brings together the research output of your School and Department ensuring that the University’s research has the profile it deserves. As a centrally managed archive with quality checking and enhanced data, Research@StAndrews: Full text acts as a ‘shop window’ for the University’s intellectual output.

How do I add my research to Research@StAndrews: Full text?

Pure is linked to Research@StAndrews: Full text so there is a single workflow for creating a publication and adding the full text. Simply click add document and complete the steps to upload your file. Instructions are available in the Pure Personal Users Guide. Following checks by library staff, documents added to Pure will appear in Research@StAndrews: Full text and Research@StAndrews: Portal will display a link called a handle, e.g. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/174.  The handle provides a permanent identifier to link to the digital Open Access version of your publication.

When can I add the full text of my publication?

You can add documents when you first create a publication in Pure or you can add documents at any time in the future when you want to update your content. The document will only be made publicly available once any publisher’s embargo has passed and provided it complies with the publisher’s copyright policy.

Why should I add the full text when there is a DOI for my article?

Adding the full text to Pure in addition to the DOI for a published article will ensure that your research is available to those who do not have subscriptions to scholarly journals. Many funding bodies now have policies in place that require grant holders to make research outputs available in an open access manner, so adding your full text allows you to comply with your funder’s requirements.

Can I add the full text directly to Research@StAndrews: Full text?
No, the only way to add a document to Research@StAndrews: Full text is through Pure. This ensures that the quality and consistency of data is maintained. It also cuts out duplication of effort in that you only need to add the publication details in one place (i.e. Pure). A subset of these details are automatically sent through to Research@StAndrews: Full text when you add the full text document.
Who should I contact with problems or queries about full text?

Contact helpdesk@st-andrews.ac.uk in the first instance and your query will be passed to the appropriate person. If your full text has not appeared in Research@StAndrews: Full text or the Research@StAndrews: Portal it may be awaiting validation by library staff.

Where in Research@StAndrews: Full text will my full text appear?

Your full text will appear in the collection for your School or Research Centre. It may appear in both, or more than one research centre - there is no restriction in the number of organisations you can add. It will also appear in any other collection affiliated to your co-authors.

Which version of my article should I upload to Pure?

You should deposit the version that complies with publisher copyright policies. This is usually the accepted author final version (postprint), following peer review but before the publisher’s copyediting and formatting. The Versions Toolkit provides useful explanations of the various versions produced during the research process. You can check the SHERPA / RoMEO database for details of standard publisher policies. The preferred file format is PDF.

Even if you are not sure about the version of the full text you have please do add it to your publication in Pure.  We will discuss with you which version can be made publicly available and we will ensure that we comply with publishers copyright policies.

Can I use the publisher's PDF from their website?

The version of your publication you can add to your research output will depend on the agreement you sign with the publisher. A few publishers allow you to use their PDF, but in most cases you will need to keep your own author-created version and use this. Library staff will check copyright policies before making your full text publicly available.
