Passport to Management Excellence
A 'Passport to Management Excellence' programme was funded in 2010 to help managers develop within a framework which is consistent across all Schools and Units.
If you would like to join the programme and be issued with your own passport, please complete the Application Form for Management Passport (Word, 82 KB) and return to CAPOD.
Please note, participants require their manager's permission to take part in the programme.
Objectives
- Enable Managers to feel confident and competent when managing their teams.
- Enabling these staff to recognise they are part of a wider management group across the organisation and encouraging them to work cross-functionally.
- Building on prior learning and knowledge.
- Creating a group of management mentors to help develop less experienced staff in the future.
- Constructing a mechanism which can link to Q6 review actions.

Background
The University ran a number of courses designed for Managers which were independent of one another and were open to participants who chose to attend by self-selection. Potentially, there was a large cohort of staff with management responsibilities who opted not to attend any form of management development. There was a concern that these staff, who are responsible for translating strategic direction into operational action, may not have been developing the skills required to be successful.
The need for more a joined up approach for management development became apparent due to a greater emphasis on performance management together with the wish for staff to work cross-functionally. Data from the staff survey also supported the need to develop managers’ confidence and skills.
