Objectives of the Scheme

  • Build on existing skills and knowledge
  • Raise awareness of administrative processes across the University
  • Provide a structured development programme for administrative staff
  • Develop new skills in a range of related areas
  • Experience a wide variety of development activities
  • Choose own direction by selecting a tailored learning programme

The Passport concept was originally conceived to package and professionalise management training in the University. The concept has expanded and has been used for Estates Cleaning staff training, with the Passport to Cleaning Excellence being delivered in Summer 2011. A new Passport to Administrative Excellence for staff who are in clerical, secretarial and administrative roles has been created. This package of training and development activities and events are planned to support staff in excelling in their roles.

The Passport comprises a mix of core and optional training courses. All participants in the scheme need to complete the core modules, but any appropriate optional courses are decided on by the individual and their manager. A participant must attend a minimum of two optional courses. Completion of the Passport will result in the award of a certificate which the individual can add to their CPD record. Participants also retain ownership of the passport as a learning log which they can refer to in the future. The timescale for completing the passport is 24 months.

A group comprising of Lisa Parker, Mary Ingram, Irene Paulton, Iona Hutchison, Sandra Roddick, Steve Yorkstone and Lynn Neville met in to discuss this concept. It was agreed:

  • Accreditation of the programme by an external body would be attractive to potential participants.  A pilot for Microsoft Certification is taking place and there is potential for the future to include this as part of the scheme.
  • Participants can be drawn from any grade level, with the approval of their line manager.  Those staff with management/supervisory responsibility would be encouraged to enrol on the Passport to Management Excellence.
