PDP - a student-led process
In other words, PDP is a process in which students engage in order to improve their abilities to make informed, accurate, fair and honest assessments of their own learning experiences. The supported process should gradually encourage and allow students to take responsibility for planning and evaluating learning opportunities to develop strengths and address current weaknesses - developing critical self-awareness. This should form part of an integrated approach to learning throughout the entire course of their higher education.
A useful resource, 'Personal Development Planning for Engineering Students', in which PDP is explained in more detail has been prepared by staff at Exeter and Loughborough Universities in association with the Higher Education Academy (HEA). The authors outline the benefits to students, staff and institutions and there is an interesting section describing three approaches for institutional implementation: The Minimalist Approach, The All-Inclusive Approach and The Pragmatic approach.
