Online Induction

To help you settle into your new role, a structured induction plan is crucial. Your induction plan is tailored depending on the type of job you do. CAPOD coordinates the induction process for all new staff by separating new staff into eight different categories depending on job role. Click on the category below which is relevant to you and it will link to the online information about your induction plan.

There is also some information about the history of Scottish Higher Education, and a guide to understanding University structure.

Staff Induction Day

The Centre for Academic, Professional and Organisational Development (CAPOD) organises an Induction day for all new staff to the University, which Academic, research & support staff are required to attend.  The event is mandatory.  The Induction is run at the start of each semester in January and September [bi-annually], lunch / refreshments are provided throughout the day.  The programme starts with a welcome from the Principal and continues with presentations and speakers from Principals' Offiice and key Service Units, representing a cross section of the University.  In the afternoon breakout, sessions offer targeted information for support staff and academic and research staff cohorts.  The day provides an opportunity for staff to learn more about University policy & proccedures, as well as networking with other new members of staff from other areas.  The talks include discussions on:

  • Health & Wellbeing
  • The Student Experience
  • The Environment
  • Your employment matters
  • Diversity awareness
  • Health & Safety and Fire awareness
  • Your Professional Development
  • ... and more!

For those who are new to St Andrews and unfamiliar with the town, there is an optional walking tour available.

Networking lunches for new staff

For those staff joining the University outwith the start of semester, there are two informal networking lunches organised in June and December. These events are optional, and are designed to supplement the main induction day which is mandatory for all new staff. The aim of the lunch is to provide new staff with a chance to meet other new colleagues and begin to form networks soon after arriving at the University.
