External funding opportunities

Community of Science: funding database

A detailed and comprehensive database of funding opportunities covering all subject areas. You can search geographically, or by keyword, sponsor, amount, funding type, etc. From their website: "Community of Science, Inc. (COS) is the leading Internet site for the global R&D community. COS offers scientists and R&D professionals direct access to the information, people and technologies that they need to succeed."

HEA Connect Funding service

The Higher Education Academy provides a comprehensive guide to all main funding opportunities available for learning and teaching projects in the UK. From their website: "Connect Funding provides a dynamic service, bringing to one place all opportunities relating to learning and teaching projects. The database is constructed to enable searching by a variety of criteria, taking users straight to funding that matches their requirements."

HEA Research Projects

From their website: "The Higher Education Academy wishes to support evidence-based approaches to policy and practice and to pursue a scholarly, research-driven agenda to improve the quality of the student experience... Academy Research Projects are intended to be relatively small-scale and should take the form of pilot or preliminary studies which might lead to applications for funding for larger-scale projects... The indicative level of funding is £25,000".

HEA (formerly LTSN) Subject Centres

Most of the Subject Centres provide development grants (of anywhere from £500 to £5000) for learning, teaching and assessment projects. Centres may also provide smaller grants for writing case studies, reviews, software development, etc. Check the relevant Subject Centre website for more information. Note that the Subject Centres also announce funding opportunities in their respective newsletters, and have lists of links to external sources of funding for their discipline.

Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)

From the website: "The JISC funds a wide range of projects, services, developments and infrastructure. Most of these initiatives originated from a successful response to a circular or tender, inviting organisations to bid for funding. This page lists any opportunities for funding which are currently open for application; these are sorted by closing date."

Society for Educational Studies

The SES will support small-scale research projects in Education to the value of £2000, as well as providing major grant awards of £30,000.

Society for General Microbiology Education Development Fund

Members of the society can apply for grants ranging from £200 to £3500 to support:

relevant science promotion initiatives developments likely to lead to an improvement in the teaching of any aspect of microbiology relevant to secondary or tertiary (including postgraduate) education in the UK.

SOCRATES

A European Community programme which promotes European cooperation in all areas of education. From the Socrates website: "This cooperation takes different forms: mobility (moving around Europe), organising joint projects, setting up European networks (disseminating ideas and good practice), and conducting studies and comparative analyses. In practice, Socrates offers people grants to study, teach, undertake a placement or follow a training course in another country. It provides support for educational establishments to organise teaching projects and to exchange experiences. It helps associations and NGOs in organising activities on educational topics, etc."
