Appendix A - Probation process

Initial Meeting – with Probationer and Mentor
(Within one month of appointment)
Meet to reach agreement about objectives of the probationary period and agree Questions 4-6 of the Q6 Form

Review Meetings – with Probationer and Mentor
(Every 2-3 months)
These provide the opportunity for both the Mentor and the Probationer to note progress towards the agreed Q6 objectives and to discuss any concerns or difficulties. Where concern is raised regarding performance, the Convener of the Probation Review Committee and the Director of Human Resources should be notified immediately.

Month 11 – Completion of Form (Probationer)
The probationer must submit a completed Q6 form along with a reflective report to Head of School for review.

Final Review Meeting – with Probationer, Head of School and Mentor
(Not later than the 12th month of appointment)
Last meeting with the probationer to discuss progress prior to the annual report being submitted to the Probation Review. Agree Questions 1-6 of Q6 form.

Probation Review Committee meets
The outcome of the meeting will be communicated to probationers and Heads of Schools.
It is important to remember that the basis for these probationary arrangements is that probationers will be provided with timely and realistic feedback about all aspects of their performance. The responsibility for this feedback lies with the Head of School.
