Appendix 4 - Duties of the university radiation protection service

The duties of this service include the following:

  • To implement the governing statutory provisions and Codes of Practice;
  • To ensure continuing compliance with the governing legislation and Codes of Practice and with new directives or instructions issued by the Health and Safety Executive or any other relevant Agency;
  • To provide the radiological protection advisory service to all employees of the University working with ionising radiation;
  • To produce Local Rules, guidance notes, forms, notices and signs and to hold stocks of these items for distribution to relevant Schools/Units;
  • To provide, as required by the Regulations, a structure for the implementation of contingency arrangements in the event of an accident;
  • To provide personal dosimeters and arrange for their processing and record keeping to be carried out by an Approved Laboratory;
  • To arrange for medical examinations to be carried out by an Appointed Doctor;
  • To liase with outside Agencies on matters concerning designation of personnel, personal monitoring, personal dose records, registration and authorisation of premises, testing and calibration of monitoring equipment, leakage testing of sealed sources, records of stocks of radioactive substances held and disposed of, provision for the disposal of radioactive waste;
  • To provide training in radiological safety (this takes the form of an annual course for undergraduates, post-graduates and staff);
  • To arrange for the removal of radioactive waste from Schools/Units and its transport to the appropriate authorised store.
