Workforce Planning Group (WPG)
The Workforce Planning Group (WPG) reviews and approves all centrally funded, non academic vacancies/new posts and requests to make temporary appointments standard. The purpose of the group is to analyse each request, review alternative considerations and assess the strategic need for the post to ensure that the staffing profile of Schools/Units matches and responds to University needs.
The WPG comprises:
- The Master;
- Vice Principal (Governance and Planning);
- Vice Principal (External Relations);
- Quaestor & Factor; and the
- Director of HR.
Any request for new/replacement posts, to make a temporary post standard, to extend temporary posts or to alter the hours of an existing post should be submitted to Financial Advice & Support (FAS) using the appropriate paperwork. It is essential that an advert and Further Particulars (using the Further Particulars template) are included with applications for new or replacement posts.
The dates for submission to FAS and meeting dates for the first half of the year are listed below. Please note, any applications submitted after the deadline date will be carried forward to the next scheduled meeting of the group.

Notification of outcomes of applications will, where possible, be given within 48 hours of the Workforce Planning Group meeting.
A minimum of three memebers of the group must be in attendance before any decisions can be made.

Please note that the following posts do not need to go to the Workforce Planning Group:
Externally Funded Posts
- An advert, Further Particulars (see Forms) and information regarding the funding arrangements should be sent directly to Recruitment.
Maternity Cover
- Requests for maternity cover should be sent to the Director of HR detailing the name of the employee going on leave and the dates of the leave. An advert and Further Particulars (see Forms) should also be included for recruitment purposes. If there are to be substantial changes to the remit of the post eg the maternity cover will only be taking on part of the role, then a Workforce Planning Group application for a replacement post should be submitted.
Academic Posts
- Requests to recruit/retain/alter the terms and conditions of internally funded academic posts should be sent directly to the Master (see Forms) along with an advert and Further Particulars (see Forms). If approved, the Master's office will pass these to Recruitment.
