Zambia IDEALS (Project Zambia)

Project Zambia logo

Every year we send out a number of experienced sports students to work in the communities and compounds of Lusaka in Zambia for just under seven weeks in the summer to work on the UK Sport international development and leadership programme with two Zambia NGOs: Edusport and Sport in Action.

In Zambia our students have an amazing time working alongside Zambian coaches to deliver sessions to children in the communities of Lusaka as well as spending time coaching in rural areas near the capital. The coaching sessions delivered by our students are mainly based around football, netball, volleyball and basketball. However, the sessions are also used to put essential health messages across to the children on prevalent issues such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and sanitation etc. Two of our students are also selected each year due to their counselling skills, as this is another arm of the project that the St Andrews students are involved with as counselling sessions are delivered to the Zambian children alongside their sports sessions.

This is a very valuable project and we are looking for students who have had previous coaching experience or are willing to work towards getting their coaching qualifications over the year and who are willing to immerse themselves into a completely different culture for ten weeks of their summer. There is a lot of demand for this project so please get your applications in early.
