Focus sports

Focus sports programme

The University of St Andrews is committed to the pursuit of academic and sporting excellence and this underpins the strategic vision for sport. Since 2005-2006 the Department of Sport and Exercise and the Athletic Union have been jointly funded to support a “Performance” Programme (rugby, football, tennis, golf, waterpolo and ultimate) that has three goals in three distinct areas:

Improved performance

Providing excellent opportunities and support structures to allow a select number of individual and teams (including coaches and support staff) to fulfil their sporting aspirations. Focus has been on achieving success in Scottish Student Sport (SSS), British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and other identified national and international events or leagues.

Grow participation

Providing excellent opportunities and high quality training and competitive experiences that attract students to become part of University Sport, encouraging adherence for lifelong participation. This process starts with collaborations with student recruitment in identifying students with an interest in sport and proactively encouraging them into the student Clubs. After graduation, providing external links to facilitate exit routes and empowering students to continue participation is key.

Outreach and sustainability

Provide educational and volunteering experiences for students by offering structured and professionally supported opportunities that enhance employability and the sustainability of future Club development. The concept of “giving something back” to raise the profile of student sport within the community, to improve the student experience and involvement within sport.

Directors of sport

A six year commitment by the University to invest in developing sport has seen the appointment of six Directors of Sport. The role of the Directors of Sports is to provide a vision that works to develop all aspects of the University Clubs, both Men and Ladies, and to provide an environment that breeds success and sustainability in individuals, the team and the associated support staff.

Fencing and Canoe also receive additional funding on this programme. They do not have a Director affiliated to their development, but work closely with the Performance Sport Manager and the AU to fulfil the Focus remit.
