Please note that entries will close on 31st May 2012

Player's Guide 2012

The Boyd Quaich is played over the Old and New courses in St Andrews. Founded in 1946 in memory of two St Andrews students who were killed during WWII, it is an international invitation competition to which Universities are invited to send two male competitors.

Entry fee for all competitors -         £90 (compulsory)

Accommodation for 3 nights -       £150 (non-compulsory)                  Total price = £240

Please note the following main points

  1. Bring a jacket and tie
  2. Practice rounds are not included in the entry fee. Any practice must be booked and paid for directly through the Links Trust (01334 466666)
  3. If you are bringing a friend to caddy for/support you, tell us in advance. We have double rooms and spare single rooms and the package price is lower than comparable accommodation elsewhere in St Andrews.
  4. Golf trolleys are not permitted during the tournament.

How to get to St Andrews

Edinburgh is the nearest airport to St Andrews. From the airport, take the “Airdirect 747” bus service (around £5) to Inverkeithing Railway Station and then take a train north to Leuchars, (4 miles from St Andrews) followed by a bus or taxi to St Andrews. This is quicker than travelling into Edinburgh on the bus first.

Briefing

There will be a briefing meeting in the main foyer of David Russell Apartments on Monday evening, 9th July at 10pm. All players are expected to attend.

Accommodation

Most players will be staying at David Russell Apartments, a student residence of the University located about 1.5miles from the Old Course. Accommodation on a full board basis is available for the inclusive period - from dinner Monday 9th July until breakfast Thursday 12th July.

N.B. The evening meal on Monday is served between 1830 and 1900.

Please note that the accommodation charge is subsidised. Although there is other accommodation available privately in St Andrews it will be more expensive. However, if you wish to seek alternative accommodation, visit the Tourist Information website at http://www.visitscotland.com/guide/where-to-stay/

We are able to offer the accommodation package to accompanying persons, either sharing a room or in a separate single room. The coach/caddy rate for the same package but excluding the Presentation Lunch is £155. This can be booked through the online entry system. The name of your coach or caddy is required at the time of booking.

If you wish to stay in St Andrews before or after the tournament you must make your own arrangements for accommodation.

Guest of the R&A

During this event you are a guest of the R&A.

We hope that the use of the R& A Clubhouse will be available to competitors only from Monday 9th July until 1300 hours on Thursday 12th July. Competitors are restricted to the South Room (this is the Trophy Room, where drinks are available), Entrance Hall, Bag Room (where clubs may be left overnight) and Locker Room. Neat informal clothing or golfing dress is to be worn at all times. Golf shoes can be worn when returning from/going to the course. Shorts are not acceptable dress in the Clubhouse. The Locker Room is not staffed so please keep it tidy.

Snack lunch & photograph

On Wednesday 11th July a snack lunch will be provided for all competitors at the R&A Clubhouse (1200 - 1400 hours) and a group photograph will be taken immediately afterwards (see below).

Group photograph

A group photograph will be taken on Wednesday 6th July at 1415 outside the R&A and a copy given to you at the Presentation Luncheon the next day. Traditionally, a jacket and tie is worn because the photograph follows lunch but golf attire is perfectly acceptable for the picture.

Consolation stableford

A stableford competition will be arranged for those who do not qualify for the final rounds. This will be played over the New Course on Thursday 12th July from 0704 hours. To take part you must sign up on the notice board in the R&A on Wednesday afternoon. Not all players who fail to make the cut can be accommodated so please sign up early if you wish to play.

Speed of play

Please play a provisional ball if there is any chance that your ball could be lost as this really helps to keep the pace of play at a satisfactory level. Follow all on-course instructions you are given and keep up with the group in front.

Distance measuring devices (Lasers)

Automatic distance measuring devices can be used during the 2012 tournament. However, such devices must measure distance only; they cannot measure slope, wind speed or temperature. This stance has been adopted following consultation with B.U.C.S. (iPhones cannot be used as technically they can be used to chart the weather).

Caddies & trolleys

All golf bags must be carried as there is a restriction on the use of trolleys on the Old Course. If you wish, you may hire a caddy from the Caddymaster’s Hut located beside the 1st tee of the Old Course. Trolleys may not be used at any time during the tournament.

Green fees

Competitors do not pay green fees for rounds played during the competition at the times indicated above.

Practice rounds

There is no practice round as part of this event. Please make your own arrangements and pay for yourself as appropriate. Information on play over the courses is available from St Andrews Links (Tel: +44(0)1334 466666).

Presentation lunch

All competitors are invited, as guests of the University of St Andrews, to a lunch on Thursday 12th July, at which the trophy will be presented. Lunch will commence immediately after the final round (normally around 1300) and be completed by 1415. Casual dress is normally worn. The venue is still to be confirmed for 2012.

Tournament scoring

A scoreboard, sited at the 18th green of the Old Course, will keep you updated on all the scoring. All scores and a full leaderboard will be updated onto the tournament website at the end of each round: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/sport/Sport/Golf/BoydQuaich/

Scores will also be posted on a popular Scottish golf website: http://www.scottishgolfview.com/search/label/Student%20Golf

This year, for the first time, we hope to provide live tournament scoring through Twitter. Interested parties should follow “The_Boyd_Quaich” to keep up to date with information posted live from the course during each round.
