William Carmichael McIntosh (1838-1931) (ms36344-36347; ms38206, ms38225, ms37816-37817 and other locations)
Professor of Natural History, University of St Andrews, from 1882-1917. Initially interested primarily in psychiatry, McIntosh was Director of the Perthshire District Asylum for 18 years before assuming the chair at St Andrews, but later became famous as a botanist and marine biologist. His papers comprise some 2,000 scientific letters; scrapbooks; notes on psychiatric and scientific subjects (including University lecture notes); personal, family and business papers; scientific sketches prepared by McIntosh and his sisters for lecture and publication illustration.
