About us
SALTIRE (St Andrews Learning and Teaching: Innovation Review and Enhancement) is the University’s central support unit for learning and teaching. Formed in 2001, we provide a range of services for students and for staff to:
- promote excellence in learning and teaching
- explore new approaches to learning and teaching
- help monitor and evaluate progress through innovation, review and enhancement.
The Unit comprises of seven distinct but overlapping areas, each led by a member of staff as follows:
1. Learning & teaching quality
Carol Morris is Deputy Director of SALTIRE and has particular responsibility for the quality of learning and teaching. This includes managing the annual monitoring process of all academic schools and the rolling programme of more intensive internal reviews of learning and teaching.
2. E-learning
Raymond Moir provides pedagogical and technical advice on technology-enhanced learning, particularly Moodle (the University's virtual learning environment) to enhance and support traditional face-to-face teaching.
3. Educational development
During Dr Heather McKiggan-Fee's maternity leave, Anji Rae is responsible for educational development; supporting and enhancing the practice of academic staff, in particular postgraduate tutors and demonstrators.
4. Academic staff development
Ros Steven supports and promotes the development of academic staff, mainly through management and facilitation of the University's academic staff development programme. She is also involved in quality monitoring, web development and supervision of SALTIRE's administration function.
5. Academic skills
June Knowles provides study skills courses and individual consultancies on subjects such as presentation skills and examination techniques to enable students to become more proficient learners.
6. Maths support
Dr Katharine Preedy provides support and individual consultancies on any mathematics- or statistics-based problem.
7. Evening degree programme
As programme co-ordinator, Dr Nicky Haxell has responsibility for the admission, induction, academic advising and pastoral support of its students. Her role also involves marketing and developing the degree, and liaison with academic, Faculty and support staff across the University.
