Overview of the Hastings Bank site

Hastings Shingle Bank is an area where aggregate extraction already takes place, and where more extraction is planned for the future. The RASSE project has identified a test site within the Hastings Shingle Bank Licence Area located approximately 15km south of Hastings.

The survey will be carried out in association with Wessex Archaeology, who have already carried out geophysical work in the vicinity during the Wrecks on the Seabed project. The target area contains the wreck of the 19th century Danish vessel, Thomas Lawrence (sank 20th March 1862), a semi-intact wooden vessel lying at a depth of approximately 40 metres (Wessex 2003, 40).

Three large sonar targets will be deployed at the site prior to commencing the survey. The targets will be tethered and buoyed so that they can be removed afterwards. Wessex Archaeology will be testing various field survey line settings, but surveys will be undertaken using high-density lines at different orientations around the sonar targets. These experiments should help the project to define optimum survey configuration settings for deploying geophysical equipment.
