Emily Messer

I am a PhD student studying social learning in capuchin and squirrel monkeys. I am supervised by Professor Andrew Whiten.

Although there is evidence of many species of primates learning socially, little is known of interspecific social learning. My PhD focuses on social learning of food cues both within and between groups of capuchin (Cebus apella) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) at the Living Links Research Centre for Human Evolution at Edinburgh Zoo (RZSS). This is a unique centre where both these species of primates are housed together; this presents opportunities for me to investigate social learning between two different species which are found to associate together in the wild.
