Gemma Prescott

Gemma (28), who graduated in 2006 with a Masters degree in Mathematics, clinched her medal with a European record throw of 20.50 metres in the F31/32/51 Women’s Club Throw event at the Olympic Stadium at the weekend. Warrington-based Gemma, a veteran of the Beijing games and bronze medal winner in the shot-put at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, was lying third after three throws, securing a chance to battle it out for a medal place.

In 2005, while still a student at St Andrews, she entered the Paralympic World Cup taking gold in the F32 discus and silver in the F32 shot.

Gemma, who has cerebral palsy, is the second St Andrean to clinch a medal at London 2012, following Sir Chris Hoy’s success on the cycling track. Gemma will go for gold again this Thursday 6 September in the shot-put.
