Olympic Honorary - Sir Chris Hoy’s student days at St Andrews

Wednesday 08 August 2012

Sir Chris Hoy

Congratulations to Honorary Graduate and former St Andrews’ student Sir Chris Hoy, who became Great Britain’s most successful Olympian last night (Tuesday 7 August) with his sixth gold medal win.

Chris studied Mathematics and Physics between 1994 and 1996 and received University Blues in his first year (pictured far right).  He was voted Sportsman of the Year in 1996 and became a member of the Great Britain National Cycling Squad in the same year.

Chris transferred to Edinburgh University to pursue his sporting career and graduated in 1999 with a BSc Honours in Applied Sports Science.

However, he eventually crossed the stage of the Younger Hall when he returned to St Andrews to officially graduate with an Honorary Degree in 2009.  Two years before, he was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame, alongside other sporting greats with St Andrews connections such as University Chancellor Sir Menzies Campbell.
