An innovative university sports initiative has made it to the final three of an awards scheme, run by Fife Council, to recognise partnership working.

The Floodlit Football scheme has seen students giving up their Saturday nights during term time to provide support and training to local youngsters on the university’s sports pitches.

The aim was to help young people become more active and engage in positive activity at weekends.

After a successful first semester the second term saw 47 youngsters attending each week. The scheme was a collaboration between the sports centre, led by Director of Football at the University, Stuart Milne, Fife Council’s East Fife Detached Youth Work Team and Active Schools scheme, Fife Constabulary, Fife Fire and Rescue and the Scottish Football Association.

Now the scheme has reached the final three out of 52 entries to The Partnership Programme of the Year Award in Fife Council’s partnership awards. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on June 22.
