The iconic sight of a student wearing a red gown is recognised as a classically St Andrews tradition, but one that has only ever been open to undergraduate students... until now.
Postgraduate students came up with the idea of a new gown as a way of marking the growing PG community out amongst their undergraduate peers. Instead of the classic red, black gowns have been created especially for PG students to hire for special occasions. The gowns bear the crest of St Leonard’s Postgraduate College.
The classic red gown was first introduced for practical reasons - to mark out young undergraduates to local barkeepers, when students were as young as 13. It is hoped the new scheme will allow postgraduate students to feel a part of the special gown tradition at St Andrews.
