Honorary graduate Sir Alex Ferguson (Doctor of Laws, November 2002) puts his Manchester United stars through their paces in the St Andrews sunshine at the University Sports Centre at the weekend.
The United manager brought his first-team squad north for a late-season training camp, with the Reds sitting two points clear of rivals Manchester City in the Barclays Premier League title race.
Sir Alex called the University out of the blue last week, keen to make use of the Sports Centre pitches and facilities at University Park. The Department of Sport and Exercise had previously hosted Barcelona for a pre-season training camp and the favourable reaction from Barca hadn’t escaped the notice of the United legend.
United stars including Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, trained on the St Andrews pitches on Friday and Saturday and also used the Strength and Conditioning Suite in the Sports Centre. The players were relaxed and happy to pose for pictures and sign autographs for the crowds who turned out to watch them.
Sir Alex gifted a signed shirt to Director of Sport and Exercise Stephen Stewart, and in return was presented with a pair of bright red St Andrews 600th Anniversary wellingtons…
