‘The greatest university in the world’. University’s 51st Rector installed.

‘The greatest university in the world’

Alistair Moffat described St Andrews as ‘the greatest university in the world’ when he was officially installed (Tuesday 20 March 2012). Our 51st Rector made the comments as he recalled his time as an undergraduate student of St Andrews in the 1970s.

Alistair was officially welcomed with addresses by Principal Louise Richardson, Mary Popple on behalf of University Court, SRC President Patrick O’Hare and Director of Representation Sam Fowles.

The official event took place after the traditional student ‘drag’, where students took the new Rector on an epic six-hour tour of student halls and local hostelries.

In customary fashion, Mr Moffat arrived in St Andrews in a novel manner, entering the Quad on a horse before being ‘dragged’ around town in a carriage by the University blues.

If you missed the ceremony you can watch it again and read the addresses online.
