2012: The Race is On — University's historic link to Olympics
Friday 06 January 2012
As St Andrews prepares to play host to the Olympic Torch this year, we go back in time to remember the University's unique connection to the Games.
University Chancellor Sir Menzies Campbell, once a successful university level athlete, ran the 200m for the GB team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and was captain of the UK Athletics Team from 1965-1966.
Once hailed "the fastest white man on the planet" Sir Menzies held the British 100m record from 1967 to 1974, having run the 100m in 10.2 seconds twice during 1967.
In the run up to the 2012 London Olympics, the famous Torch will stop by at the ancient heart of the University as it makes the journey south via 8,000 inspirational individuals from all walks of life.
