Seve passed away on 7 May 2011 aged 54 after a long battle with cancer. One of the world’s greatest ever golfers, he won the Open Championship at St Andrews in 1984 in one of the sport’s most iconic moments and has long held a special place in the affections of townspeople, university staff and students.

At the award of his Honorary Degree prior to the Millennium Open in St Andrews, the Younger Hall was full to capacity to hear Acting Principal Professor Colin Vincent describe Seve as a genius who “has brought golfing fame and enduring respectability to Europe.”

The University extends its deepest sympathies to Seve’s family.
