Students gather at dawn for May Dip.
Hundreds of students gathered in the early hours of May Day (Sunday 1 May) to take part in the annual May Dip.
The event included staff, swimmers and superstitious students unwilling to test the myth that they will fail their degree if they step on the initials of martyr Patrick Hamilton.
A popular event in the student calendar, tradition suggests that the only way to remove such a curse is to plunge into the chilly waters of St Andrews.
