Raisin the roof - students take part in annual foam fight.
Tuesday 23 November 2010
Around 1,500 new students, dressed as everything from a viking to Santa Claus, took part in this year's Raisin Monday foam fight.
The event forms part of the Academic Family tradition that started at the University post World War II, as a way of welcoming and integrating new students. Senior students formed 'academic families' and the 'children' (first years) were looked after and shown around.
In the old days new students would thank their parents with a pound of raisins, which eventually evolved into a bottle of wine and a giant foam fight in St Salvator's Quad.
