Ben Goulter captures second year International Relations student Rachel Smith in St Salvator's Quadrangle during the festive break.

The University red gown was introduced post-Reformation as compulsory 'school uniform' to students as young as 13 as a way of preventing them from illicit drinking in public houses.

The gown, worn differently according to year of study, is still worn today by St Andrews students for formal occasions and by student ambassadors... and occasionally for extra warmth!
