Detachments of the Highland Cycle Brigade and the Lancashire Hussars (Imperial Yeomanry) were stationed in St Andrews during the war from 1914 to 1918.

This photograph, taken in 1915, shows four soldiers in military uniform and greatcoats, with rifles and fixed bayonets, beside ammunition in a clearing or trench.
