An innovative bird deterrent, designed to ward off seagulls and pigeons, was launched this week at the University of St Andrews.

'Robop' is a robotic bird that is designed to look, move and sound like a peregrine falcon. Birds are convinced that the model is a real falcon, and are scared off to other sites.

Dr Will Cresswell, an expert on bird behaviour in the School of Biology, has been working with the team behind Robop to improve the original design and make the robot even more effective in combatting nuisance birds.

Trials with an experimental ground flying model (pictured) are underway as well as a prototype 'hide' desgin from which Robop will appear automatically.
