Cynicus' depiction of The Lovers' Walk, Upcott Wood, Bideford.
Martin Anderson (later known as Cynicus), was born in Leuchars, Fife in 1854.
The Victorian artist was well known for the cartoons and postcard designs which he created.
As an outsider, he took London by storm in the early 1880s with his satirical cartoons and later, in Tayport, he became a successful designer of the very first humorous postcards.
In 1902, Cynicus set up a publishing company in Tayport just as the postcard craze had taken off (in that year alone, it was estimated that 420 million cards were posted in Britain).
